Abstract

This chapter explores how Japanese and British women developed sometimes contesting interpretations of nationalism and internationalism in the young ecumenical movement of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF). Ruth Rouse, a British woman who became the first woman travelling secretary of the WSCF, met Kawai Michi, the first Japanese secretary of Japan YWCA, at the 1907 Tokyo conference, the first WSCF conference to be held in Asia, only two years after the Russo-Japanese War. Invited by Rouse who had also worked with Russian women, Kawai visited the WSCF movement in Europe from 1909 to 1911 when she was attending the World YWCA conference in Berlin. In these transnational encounters, Kawai, coming from Japan in exhilaration of victory of the Russo-Japanese War, resented Russian women’s hopes for reconciliation with Japanese women; whereas Rouse saw Kawai’s potential in inspiring indifferent North American women into the WSCF movement as a living exemplar of the positive impact of Christianity on an Asian woman from a non-Christian culture. Drawing on their writings, this chapter explores how imperialisms and their diverse transnational experiences in Europe, North America and Asia, impacted their imaginations of the other and their interpretations of Christian internationalism and nationalism.
