Abstract

This chapter explores a concrete aspect of the internationalism of the WSCF by analyzing the concept of itinerant secretary endorsed by John Mott from the very first steps of the federation. He was called a world citizen by his biographers. First, the article examines precisely how these trips took place. Mott’s travels involved a specific worldview: the planet as a missionary land open to a US Protestant for both spiritual and moral purposes. In turn, these trips built a worldview, a “world consciousness” that we can analyze by Mott’s descriptions of the situation of Christianity in each region visited. Secondly, the article will show how this vision of the world and of the WSCF mission carried by Mott is received in a specific context, that of Geneva, one of the European center of the youth ecumenical movement. His visit in 1911, well documented in Swiss sources, allows us to measure the difference between the discourse carried by Mott on and in Switzerland and the understanding that the Swiss have of their religious situation and the role of the WSCF. The discrepancy between these different perspectives allows us to rethink the articulation between nationalism and internationalism within the WSCF.
