Abstract

The overarching goal of attaining foundational literacy and numeracy along with value education has been reiterated time and again. Inculcating life skills among children in addition to the reading-writing-arithmetic skills signifies quality education in its truest sense. Apart from family, schools play a cardinal role in imparting such attributes and their role attains a greater significance as the task of socialisation is, to a major extent, being handed over to the schools.

Given such profound significance of schools, their sudden and unexpected closure worldwide due to COVID-19 pandemic left everyone perplexed. The administrators, teachers, students and parents were completely unprepared to deal with such an unprecedented situation. Though pandemic affected the social, psychological and economic well-being of each one of us, it is the children who were worst affected in this scenario. For them, it was not only a major health crisis but also cognitive, psychological and emotional crisis.

Though every country has grappled with this dire situation, the way schools in India responded to it deserves attention due to having one of the largest education systems, s and the unimaginable diversity that exists within the country. The paper examines the ways school administrators responded to the school closures and its wider implications.
