Abstract

This chapter traces the history and structure of financial sanctions by the United States since 1945 and provides a representative chronology of their use. It describes how financial sanctions have evolved from an uncommon measure during the Cold War into a core tool of foreign policy and economic statecraft since 1990, and one that has moved from comprehensive embargoes against nation-states towards targeted and increasingly prescriptive sanctions also against non-state actors.
