Abstract

This essay shares an ongoing creative research project exploring practices of situated listening—including soundwalking, conversation and field recording—on the street in Albany (NY) where I live. To listen responsively, here, is to reverberate with issues of public space, food justice, sonic territorialism, community engagement, violence, structural racism, and the environmental and economic legacy of 20th Century urban renewal. Taking to heart Dylan Robinson’s call for settlers to develop their own allied listening practices, this essay asks: How to listen as a guest? How to become aware of our own listening positionality, while also hearing from other perspectives? How to attune to the voices—human and non-human, present and past—of a complex and contested site? Grappling with these questions, I argue for practices of attending to the hyperlocal (or “going nowhere”) and resisting outputs and outcomes (or “doing nothing”) as powerful tools for unsettling listening habits. In addition to Robinson, this essay engages the work of artist collective Ultra-Red, and decolonial scholars Rolando Vázquez and Walter Mignolo, to argue that it is only in deeply, riskily unsettling our listening that we can create the necessary space to be reshaped by what we hear, and find new, generative ways to respond.
