Abstract

Painting in the contemporary epoch of dematerialized, post-modern practices and arts-based research appears out of step with the directions of art in academic contexts. This comes on the heels of nearly two centuries of speculation about the death of painting and its pending irrelevance, even as numerous artists still identify with the medium of painting. This chapter examines painting’s processes and material logic to develop a framework for painters to use in the context of arts-based research. We begin by speculating what exactly painting contributes to knowledge and then examining the literature to ask what painters really do in their processes and approaches to image making. Following this, we identify and describe four key components that paintings tend to have in common: Methods, language and genre, material and medium, and intersections of form and content. These components are then theorized as a framework for painting, offering painters a schematic through which to consider their own practices in emergent paradigms of arts-based research.
