Abstract

Traditionskern is among the most notorious Reinhard Wenskusâ concepts. In the historianâs view, it was a group of Individuals which, among Barbarian peoples, was close to royal lines and custodians of the most ancient gensâ traditions. It was small, but strongly cohesive; a catalyst for the Barbarian peoples dominating the last days of Rome. The Traditionskern would eventually shape the aristocratic identities for the early medieval kingdoms. Created more than half a century ago, the concept of Traditionskern became, between the 90s and 2000s, the focus of bitter criticism. This overshadowed the intuitionâs great merits. Calling into question the idea of Gefolgschaft, the intervention debates its meaning and usefulness for the study of barbaric identities.
