Abstract

The article studies the evolution of the use and function of the cingulum militiae between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The chronological span examined goes from the fourth to the ninth century, with particular attention to developments in Gaul and Italy. Through the analysis of normative and narrative sources, as well as archaeological evidence, the study shows the shift in the use of the cingulum from a symbol of power delegated by the Roman state to a distinctive sign of status.
