Abstract

This essay explores the representation and self-representation of Eastern European artists and their region. It examines how Eastern Europeans create, modify, and perceive their identity and how this perception is influenced by both internal and external views. The concept of “Eastern Europe” is discussed as a construct primarily defined by political and economic factors rather than geographic or social ones, particularly following the Yalta Conference of 1945. The essay identifies two main issues: the lack of a common point of identification among Eastern Europeans and the disparity between how the region is viewed internally versus externally. The essay also outlines four historical periods of Eastern Europe: its existence without self-reflection, the interwar period marked by national subjectivization, the Cold War era of reduced subjectivization, and the post-1989 period of political and cultural transformation. The essay highlights the role of art and culture in representing Eastern Europe during these periods, particularly after 1989, when art became a significant means of political and cultural expression. The changing nature of art in the postsocialist condition and its evolving relationship with global art are discussed. The essay concludes by noting the diminishing importance of Eastern European art in recent decades as it becomes more integrated into the broader European and global art scenes.
