Abstract

This chapter takes its point of departure from a discussion of the changing role of art in society (analyzed by such figures as Peter Bürger, Andreas Huyssen, and Arthur Danto), in particular art’s loss of clearly defined social, existential, or cognitive functions. Erjavec goes on considers two possible ways of understanding aesthetics. In one construal, represented by such aesthetic thinkers as Heinz Paetzold and Fredric Jameson, aesthetics extends to the full anthropological domain of “culture.” Affirming the importance of Jameson’s analysis, Erjavec nevertheless notes Jameson’s consistent slippage between the terms art and culture, which he often uses interchangeably. Erjavec suggests that while Jameson consistently tries—and often succeeds—in eliciting socio-historical meanings from works with overt political intentions or, through a Frankfurt School-influenced hermeneutic elicits such meanings from a wider range of work, he is less successful in the face of a wide range of art works. Erjavec suggests that enriching and deepening Jameson’s “cognitive mapping” of art in contemporary society requires still-to-be accomplished further theoretical work.
