Abstract

In this chapter, Erjavec seeks to trace the trajectory of aesthetics as it traverses the evolution of art from modernism through postmodernism to contemporary art. He focuses on three figures who have intervened in the question of a contemporary aesthetics: the curator Nicolas Bourriaud, philosopher Jacques Rancière, and art historian Terry Smith. In the transition from modernism, Erjavec recalls the importance in the 1980s and 90s of theories of postmodernism—articulated by Lyotard, Jameson, Welsch, Jencks, and others—which have subsequently gone into eclipse in contemporary aesthetic and art-theoretical discussions. He progresses to discuss Bourriaud’s “relational aesthetics” and “relational art,” which in certain respects resonate with the historical avantgarde, but which much weaker oppositional energies and emancipatory claims. Turning to Rancière, he notes that Rancière’s contribution to a theory of contemporary art was to—problematically—attempt to debunk the notion of “modernism” and “avantgarde” as such; Rancière made 20th-century radical art continuous with late 18- and 19-century art, insofar as all were part of a single centuries-long “aesthetic regime of art” that continues without break to our day. Lastly, he consider Terry Smith’s definition of contemporaneity as an accelerated and intensified co-existence of disjunct, contradictory, and irreducibly different modes of perception, experience, and temporality. Erjavec concludes with the need for further theoretical labor to theorize the relations of modern and contemporary.
