Abstract

This chapter focuses on the aesthetic theory and more broadly the aesthetic thinking of the Frankfurt School philosopher and sociologist Theodor Adorno. Erjavec notes that for Adorno, art is highly valuable for its ability to diverge and dissent from empirical reality, which in his view was increasing rationalized and homogenized within a nearly-seamless system of capitalism, administrative power, and instrumental thought. Aesthetics, in turn, remains valuable for its ability to discern and interpret art’s dissent. Situating Adorno’s defense of the autonomy of art between the historic avantgardes as understood by Peter Bürger and postmodern critics of artistic autonomy such as Wolfgang Welsch, Erjavec poses the question of the historicity of art and whether the art of the present is continuous with the modern art Adorno advocates or something substantially different. Adorno himself would offer a complex answer: that great art persists across historical transformations, both carrying over certain enduring meanings and taking on new ones from new contexts (including the contexts shaped by more recent works of art). Artworks do not just passively reflect their contexts, but also shape them dynamically and reciprocally. In the latter parts of the essay, Erjavec surveys problems of both the neoavantgarde and postmodernism, in which contemporary theory has diagnosed a waning of the social significance and/or claim to truth-value of art. He concludes by holding Adorno as a standard for an emergent contemporary art that had rediscovered its consequentiality and a renewed aesthetic theory that would match its high ambitions.
