Abstract

In his later writings, Brandes seems to distance himself from Jewishness even more than in his early writings, particularly through the two significant strategies of âde-Judaizingâ and âde-cosmopolitanization,â which are most evident in the editing process of Brandesâ Samlede Skrifter (1899â1910) and in his autobiography Levned (1905â08). Today, it is difficult to grasp just how stigmatizing antisemitism was for individuals of Jewish descent in the fin-de-siÃ©cle period. For Brandes, the stigmatization of him began immediately after the publication of Emigrantlitteraturen in 1872, and it never ceased. Undoubtedly, the main personal consequence for Brandes was that this stigmatization made it impossible for him to pursue the promising academic career he otherwise had begun in the 1860s. The distancing strategies of âDe-Judaizingâ and âde-cosmopolitanizationâ will as such in the chapter be viewed as part of Brandesâ reactions to modern antisemitism and moreover related to Brandesâ goal of becoming a professor at the University of Copenhagen.
