Abstract

This article explores the notions of youth and generation in the writings of Georg Brandes in the face of World War I. Initially, youth is at the center of his Main Currents, but the last volume, The Young Germany, Brandes is at the point of taking leave of his celebration of youth. Youth, enthusiasm, and âmain currentsâ yield to maturity, skepticism, and great personalities. In his book The World at War, he has to make a thorough revision of his understanding of youth since the young generation has turned conservative or even reactionary. To be young is to take sides, and neutrality is hardly what is most characteristic of a generation in the process of defining itself. The article shows how the mature Brandes â confronted with the frightening number of the young intellectuals who saw the war as a way to cultural renewal â chose to fight for neutrality.
