This chapter analyses Stevensonâs depiction of the landscape both in Kidnapped (1886) and in The Beach of FalesÃ¡ (1892),in order to show that landscape moves beyond a static picturesque dÃ©cor, to become a controversial rhetoric of cultural, political and aesthetic domination: Scottish and Polynesian landscapes are mirrored and diffracted in each other, and similarly resist English appropriation.Stevenson revisits the dominant aesthetics of landscape at the end of the 19^th century, and marks landscape imagery as a way to enforce control over the Scottish and Polynesian native inhabitants, to impose an authoritative, controlling and domineering vision of the land. In his fictions, Scottish and Polynesian landscapes are rephrased as territories, occupied and lived in by their inhabitants: they become active sites of ideological resistance to the strategies of English colonisation Stevenson recognized as similar both in Scotland and in the Pacific.Stevenson thus exposes the same stereotypes of âpicturesqueâ landscape, both in Kidnapped and in The Beach of FalesÃ¡: he deprecates the landscape â as it is depicted or painted by the travellers in the Highlands and in the Pacific â as a set of ideological deluded reproductions, aiming at usurping the land, and replaces it with a native re-appropriation of landscape as it is lived-in, as it is perceived, levelling the viewpoint and returning it to those who practise it.
