This chapter examines Walter Scottâs complex legacy in the late writings of Robert Louis Stevenson. What happens to Scottâs idea of internal and superseded borders in the context of British quasi- or crypto-imperialism in the South Seas? How does the buried model of Scott as tale-teller, ballad-collector, border-theorizer, lie behind works as different as The Master of Ballantrae and the Beach of FalesÃ¡? How did Scottâs identity of belatedness (in relation to 1745) prove generative for Stevenson? Scottâs interest in borders did not cease with the publication of his collection Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border in 1802-3. His novels continued to hover on and around the superseded border between Scotland and England, exploring it as a rich chronotope: a spatial organization inextricably tied to certain configurations of time and events. This mixed zone of land, water, and memory is where narratives of identity play themselves outâmost notably in his 1824 Redgauntlet. Scottâs own fiction constitutes a kind of border zone, where Scottish Enlightenment stadial history starts to transform into something else through his keen interest in uneven development: belatedness as a Romantic identity, as a cause. Stevenson writes that The Master of Ballantrae âextends over many years and travels into many countries,â that it was largely written âupon the sea,â that he completed it âby the loud shores of a subtropical island [Oahu].â The novelâs spatial reach and restlessness are as striking as its evocation of moments of absolute stillness and frozenness. This chapter focuses on how Stevenson weaves his plots around return, perdurance, and the recovery of what had been buried.
