Stevenson reflects on his own infant imagination by measuring spatial difference: âWhere will all come home?â He asks this rhetorical question as he launches his toy boats on the river in A Childâs Garden of Verses. This chapter charts how Stevenson maps a world that was increasingly known by its global extent as emigration extended the general public consciousness. But at the same time, communications technologies offered a different way of measuring the globe during Stevensonâs lifetime, seeming to lessen those distances. For example, 1866 had seen the first successful transatlantic cable; 1870 a cable was laid from London to Mumbai and by 1872 India was linked to Australia. In the second half of the 1870s the telephone was being developed, just in time for Stevenson, in California to reunite with Fanny Osbourne, to experiment with the new invention, as he records in The Silverado Squatters.

The chapter proposes that we can trace in Stevensonâs work modes of connectivity and actor-centred metrics. Space is always produced, and the growth of communication technology is one way of exploring the multiple social systems and acts that produce it. Following Roland Wenzelhuemerâs study of nineteenth-century telegraphy, this challenges a common view of the nineteenth century as a period of random and heterogeneous spaces which modernity homogenises. Rather, we can see how Stevensonâs fiction pays attention to how individual actors respond to the discourse of time and space in ways that point to both the sense of global spatial distance and at the same time its management into empirical simultaneity.
