Abstract

Affirmative action in university admissions to counter inequality has attracted significant levels of controversy and debate. This chapter aims to contribute to the debate by exploring admission procedures at five historically universities in South Africa, focusing on policies that were aimed at redressing historical disadvantage. Our analysis, based exclusively on publicly available information, focuses on how these universities implemented regulations and quantitative techniques to facilitate admission of historically disadvantaged applicants, devoting particular attention to the different proxies used to define disadvantage. The chapter concludes by discussing the advantages and challenges of different admission ‘algorithms’ and by outlining the potential for further research on the desirability of introducing machine learning tools in the admission processes of higher education institutions in South Africa.
