Abstract

Since the reform and opening-up policy was implemented, the rural areas of northern Shaanxi province have undergone tremendous changes, including the shift from agriculture as the single income source to a diversified economy, accelerated urbanization, and social stratification. Amid such changes in the social environment, the revived temple fairs, while performing their traditional functions, showed some new features. Among others, temple fairs were at the heart of the cultural communities of neighborhoods, changing from the worship of gods to expression of social needs, playing an important role in maintaining order in the countryside, and starting to play a part in public affairs of communities, and there was increased interaction between non-governmental temple fairs and local governments. Therefore, a comprehensive and objective evaluation of temple fairs will help advance the development of the western region of China and promote stability and development in rural China.
