Abstract

While the Great-Leap-Forward Ballads and the Tianâanmen Poems both have prototypical significance, they had distinct characteristics because they took place in different historical contexts. The former is a nationwide and top-down poetry movement launched and organized by the government to support the Great Leap Forward. The latter, on the other hand, is a spontaneous demonstration that took place in a very special political context, in which the public weaponized poems to mourn the death of Zhou Enlai and to condemn the Gang of Four. The Tianâanmen Poems Campaign was quickly suppressed, but its legacy lived on for a very long time. Both poetry movements are perfect illustrations that âthe people, and the people alone, are the makers of history.â The people are a powerful force driving social reform and the primary creators of culture. The rise and rapid development of mass culture have a profound influence on the flourishing of socialist culture.
