Abstract

After the founding of the PRC, the CPC and the government devoted themselves to the conservation of cultural heritage while coming to grips with political construction and economic development. Agencies overseeing cultural affairs at all levels of government implemented a variety of measures in order to salvage the privately-owned old and antique books from 1949 to 1965. First, a number of prestigious libraries and ancient academies were preserved, and the agencies took custody of and purchased a group of books collected in libraries and academies. Then action was taken to prevent books from being destroyed. Afterwards, the agencies actively engaged in book hunting procuring. In summary, although there were errors in the salvage, a lot of privately-owned old and antique books, files, calligraphy, and paintings on the edge of being destroyed were able to be handed down, serving as valuable resources for today’s academic study and cultural construction.
