Abstract

Aeneas in the Underworld is a contemporary chamber oratorio for solo speaking guitarist, ensemble, and electronics, based on the voyage to the underworld depicted in the sixth book of Vergil’s Aeneid. The libretto, spoken in Classical Latin by the solo guitarist, comprises approximately one-quarter of Vergil’s original text. The musical work, composed between 2008 and 2018, makes extensive use of quotation and transformations of repertoire from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras. Drawing upon Bruce Louden’s notion of the ‘retrospective prophecy’ in Vergil’s Aeneid, the author, who is also the composer, describes the retrospective trans-historicism in Aeneas in the Underworld, tying past to present through language, performance genre, musical quotation, instrumental tuning, and performance techniques. The resulting creative work is both a setting of a classical apocalyptic narrative to music, and a contemporary music in the apocalyptic mode.
