Abstract

This chapter presents a case study from Pernambuco, Brazil of how apocalypticism in recent popular culture can retain much of an older millenarian religious framework. It uses the Northeastern Brazilian case to engage with Lorenzo DiTommaso’s theory of “superflat apocalypticism,” where he argues that the current discourse network of new media flows has led to an apocalypticism “disconnected from the contexts that once gave them meaning and coherence” (DiTommaso 2014). The chapter argues that the music and activist scenes of the interior towns of Arcoverde and Pesqueira, Pernambuco offer a bridge between older and newer apocalyptic modes. By remaining deeply engaged with older religious and political symbols and narratives, musicians, and activists such as Helton Moura, José Paes de Lira (Lirinha), and Ângelo Bueno occupy a localized, multiculturalized and ‘thick’ (read not ‘superflat’) apocalyptic mode.
