Abstract

The chapter discusses the ambivalent role of S-21 documents in various contexts: as evidence and relics in the first months of the museum, as Cambodia reopened to foreigners, specifically journalists and delegations who could bear witness to the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge; and as evidentiary documentation in the almost forgotten People’s Revolutionary Tribunal (PRT) of August 1979 and over three decades later in the widely publicized Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). The chapter reviews to what extent the earliest impressions and reports, albeit from fleeting visits, served as critical elements of those two judicial processes and were echoed in their judgments. Even today, the archive continues to be a fundamental source for the ongoing process of seeking a deeper understanding of the S-21 institution, the apex of the repressive “security” apparatus of Democratic Kampuchea.
