Abstract

Tuol Sleng is often described as a historical site that has been directly inspired by the visits of its first curator Mai Lam to international Holocaust memorial sites. It is an attractive idea, but hardly supported by corresponding records. By broadening the investigation in terms of temporalities and actors, the chapter seeks to elucidate the origin of Holocaust references during the early years of Tuol Sleng as well as such references from the first journalists and visitors at the site. It shows that Holocaust references at Tuol Sleng stemmed from well-established Vietnamese practices and experiences during the Second Indochinese War. Mai Lam links the two spheres. As the museum aimed at international recognition, the staff drew on selected elements of Holocaust memorialization. Visiting Buchenwald and the Museum of German History in East-Berlin, Tuol Sleng’s first director Ung Pech tried to find inspiration and direct support in order to transfer this well-known imagery to Tuol Sleng. Yet, such an explicit aesthetics was not necessary for the journalists and visitors, who had themselves their own established imagery of the Holocaust when they visited the museum. This points to an understanding of Tuol Sleng as being part of a memorialization web that weaves together international, regional, and local references in a specific ideological and geopolitical context.
