Abstract

At the core of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in the very early years was investigation – not only at its location at the former prison site S-21. But after the People’s Revolutionary tribunal had passed and the new government could not achieve to be acknowledged by the United Nations, attention for further research faded. Cambodia focused on reconstruction. With foreign assistance, the museum managed to preserve and microfilm the archives, including the photos. However, in the decades to come any knowledge about S-21 was mainly produced by outsiders, such as academic David Chandler, DC-Cam, filmmaker Rithy Phan and later the ECCC. Only recently has research become an integrated part of the museum’s work. Starting with a fresh view of the site, the museum team explored the larger compound of S-21, the numerous graffiti on the walls and the traces of former cells in the rooms. The archives – acknowledged by UNESCO Memory of the world in 2009 – are now digitized and accessible. The museum’s recent attempt to become a UNESCO World Heritage site, together with former M-13 prison and Choeung Ek Genodical Center adds to the urgency to understand and document its own history.
