Abstract

This chapter addresses the complexities of experienced teachers constructing new understandings through visual narrative self-study projects. These visual projects included the use of multimodal and self-study practices that explored visual ethnographic theory. The research had two purposes: (a) to examine how experienced teachers working in co-construction develop new contextual understandings because of reflection and collaborative dialogue related to visual ethnographic research, and (b) to identify ways in which these experiences (visual narrative projects of educators) support the development of impactful professional growth. This study also discovered ways in which this experience (visual professional development) supports the meaningful growth, wellness, and resiliency of teachers. This project has relevance for teacher education in both theory and practice. It adds to the existing body of research on teacher reflection and teacher identity by providing insights into the complexities regarding self-study and the mutual construction of knowledge. It also brings to light the potential community connections of practicing teachers through visual ethnographic research. A result of the knowledge gained in this study is that learning methodologies can be developed to assist teachers to create more effective âconnectedâ teaching practices with their community.
