Abstract

Contemporary societies are technologically rich but temporally poor. Through convenience, digital cameras are said to empower users and camera-enabled smartphones facilitate learning. Conversely, analog photomedia take time, both to make photographs and to see results. If technology is fast and culture slow, what does that mean for the future of photomedia literacy (PL), the ability to ‘read’ and ‘write’ images in accordance with the photographic apparatus? To address this question, students at a Japanese national university were tasked with contributing weekly to a visual archive of a contemporary ruin in Tsukuba city (‘Imagine the Future Archive’). Employing an informal project-based learning model (PBL), results from the first year are presented using a polyvocal approach, whereby students and authors reflect textually and visually on experiences. These lay a platform for future, more detailed discussions of PL as well as implications for general studies of visual literacy that may unwittingly valorize digital cameras at the expense of more diverse photomedia knowledge.
