Abstract

Innovative businesses today are engaging with visual tools such as drawing to streamline communication, enhance effectiveness and productivity, and inspire breakthrough thinking. As visual meetings are rapidly becoming an integral part of the business collaboration process, our business schools must keep pace and incorporate visual strategies, including drawing, into their curricula.

This chapter presents the theories, research, and development of a unique Visual Toolkit, a teaching tool that focuses on drawing to help business students develop visual literacy skills needed to excel in the organizational workplace of the future. Initially designed for the Pilon School of Business at Sheridan College in Ontario Canada, the Visual Toolkit for Teaching Business is now available online for all business schools.

This Visual Toolkit covers multiple ways in which drawing can be used in business courses to enhance learners’ experience and contains the following resources: an animated introductory video, a visual vocabulary guide and icon library, teacher- and student-led visual templates, drawing exercises, and faculty workshops on how to incorporate drawing into the classroom. Together, these resources prepare students for the business world through enhancing their comprehension, improving memory retention, as well as boosting their engagement, collaboration, and creativity.
