Abstract

This chapter introduces visual pedagogy as an educational paradigm and illustrates its application to teaching visual research methods. In our understanding, visual pedagogy, which is a relatively new and not yet well-established concept, is an educational paradigm that follows a dedicated and holistic visual approach to teaching in order to make each class as visual as possible. We constructed our own framework for visual pedagogy on the basis of already established non-visual educational theories, namely, dialogic pedagogy, experiential learning and collaborative learning. The activities and exercises undertaken in our classroom (lectures, group work, homework assignments, course materials, evaluation, and assessment) were visual, developing students’ competence in looking at and interpreting images, and either using or creating a variety of visuals. We also applied diverse activity modes, including drawing, photographing, collage making, creating posters, and visual diary-keeping. Although visual pedagogy requires careful planning of the course content and activities, and constant improvisation in the classroom, it has potential for successful adaptation beyond the visual research methods courses.
