Abstract

During the past few decades, the involvement of women artists has received growing attention in Dada historiography. Still, many women who did participate at some point in Dada are just names â mentioned in the publicity and programs of Dada events, but with little-to-no information on their background and biography. Two of these names are Jeanne Rigaud and Maria Cantarelli, who are mentioned in the French program of the second Zurich Dada soirÃ©e held in the Galerie Voltaire on 14 April 1917. As this article points out, in their case the names were indeed just names, or rather nicknames, referring to â most likely â Sophie Taeuber and Maya Chrusecz in their roles as dressmakers responsible for the costumes worn by dancers from the Hungarian transplant Rudolf von Labanâs dance, school enacting their versions of âAfricanâ dances.
