Abstract

The paper aims to elaborate on the anthology Book of New Artists, edited by Lajos KassÃ¡k and LÃ¡szlÃ³ Moholy-Nagy in 1922 with special focus on its editing process and its connection to Dada and Constructivism. Besides the introduction, the anthology consists exclusively of reproductions of various works of art from the main avant-garde movements as well as photographs of machinery. The way in which the editing took place involved cooperation with other avant-garde artists and since a language barrier did not affect the understanding and the distribution of the book, it became internationally known, while the editors succeeded in becoming more active members of the avant-garde network. Because the avant-garde Isms were represented from KassÃ¡kâs perspective, Dada could appear in the book as a preceding movement of Constructivism. According to the introduction, Dadaism with its destruction made the existence of Constructivism possible, as KassÃ¡k stated: âWhat we accept from Dadaism is the fanaticism of destruction.â A shift from Dada towards Constructivism is visible in the editing process as well, which took more than one and a half years. The examination of the correspondence of the editors and the manuscripts of KassÃ¡k reveal the sources of the anthology while also showing the intentions of the editors as to which artists and works of arts to be published as Dada or Constructivist.
