Abstract

The issues around the (marginal) influence of Dadaism on Polish artistic circles have been already discussed by Polish avant-garde researchers. Piotr Piotrowski indicated singular “Dadaist” manifestos, Beata Śniecikowska traced the influence of Dada on Polish avant-garde poetry, while Andrzej Turowski claimed that Polish discourse on Dadaism merged with Futurism. I agree with all of them, that there was simply no Dadaism in Poland in such a form as in France, Switzerland, Germany and a few of the other Eastern European countries. The only Polish-Jewish artist associated with Dada was in fact Marcel Slodki, who created posters for Cabaret Voltaire and exhibited with Dadaists in Zurich up to 1917. In my text I do not repeat facts about the (marginal) influence of Dadaism, but rather show the ways in which it reached Poland. I show which information reached Poland about Dada, which literary works were translated into the Polish language and staged in Polish theatres, as well as which Dada artworks were included in Polish art collections. I start by commenting on the first commentary concerning Dada that appeared in the Polish press. I then write about the role of translations of Kurt Schwitters and Tristan Tzara in the 1920s modernist and avant-garde magazines. In the last part of my article I recall Dadaist theatrical pieces staged at the Cricot Theatre in Cracow during the 1930s, and I mention Dadaist artworks included in the International Collection of Modern Art in Łódź (1931). Such a chronological overview will show the channels through which Dada reached Poland; and will bring us closer to the conclusion that Polish artists began to be interested in Dada too late to be significantly influenced by its aesthetics.
