Abstract

From the 2000s we have observed in Brazil an important presence of youth as a category of political identification in rural social movements and in national representation spheres of governmental instances where public policies are formulated. As a starting point for this analysis, I revisit the Survey “Are Young People Leaving? The Construction of the Rural Youth Category in Social Movements in Brazil”. There, we observed, in national spheres of social movements and governmental representation, the presence and leadership of young women, while in their territories they still experienced oppression. I intend to demonstrate that a new generation has assumed rural youth as a political identity, as a generational unit (Mannheim, 1993), withholding differences for their collective identities as movements with multiple experiences (Brah, 2006). In the first part of this chapter, I return to the debate on the category of youth and rural youth. In the second part, I approach the political construction of the rural youth category, in dialogue with the aforementioned research. In the third part, I try to contribute to a balance of the Lula-Dilma governments, regarding public policies for rural youth and the incidence of agendas of this political category.
