Abstract

Growing inequality is a common and global characteristic of contemporary societies. Latin America is one of the most unequal regions in the world, and inequality has been a persistent feature in most of these countries. This chapter explores how inequality affects the experience of young people in different spheres of social life. Drawing out from my own fieldwork with young people from disadvantaged and privileged social classes in Mexico, as well as from other ethnographic studies in several countries, the analysis focuses on three main dimensions: education, urban space and consumption. The main argument is that a process of social fragmentation of youth lives is taking place as a result of this persistent and increasing inequality.
