Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to make a critical analysis of the principle debates surrounding the significance of youth transitions from different theoretical and methodological perspectives in Europe and the English-speaking countries. The reflection goes beyond the dualistic interpretive model on agency and structure as an interpretive framework for youthful behaviors. The theoretical revision proposal presented in this chapter aims at associating the classic perspective of social, demographic, economic and institutional contexts with paradigms about young people’s subjective reinterpretation of these structural conditions in order to properly understand the meaning of being young in this historical moment. In short, this chapter will address the current debate on young people by contrasting the theoretical perspectives in order to give rise to new questions, concepts and methodological tools that make it possible to formulate new analysis models that understand youth as a process, beyond descriptive and socio-demographic and economic studies.
