Information for Brill Authors and Editors
Brill encourages the re-use of our authors’ and editors’ texts in other publications and in translated editions. However, permission to re-publish or to translate these texts must be obtained beforehand from Brill.
In a few exceptional cases no written permission is required.
You (or your publisher) do not have to obtain permission from Brill when re-using/translating your Brill text (the original English text or a translation) in the following type of publications:
- a new monograph authored by you (including ‘The best writings of author X’ works, Festschriften and In Memoriams)
- an edited volume of which you are the general editor
In such cases, Brill grants free permission, provided that only a maximum of 40% of an already published Brill book is used in your new book and that the original Brill book is acknowledged. There is, however, one exception to this free permission: should the new monograph be published with an Open Access license, a fee will be charged by Brill for the Open Access license. If your monograph will be published with an Open Access/Creative Commons license, please contact our Open Access Department for further details at openaccess-brill@degruyterbrill.com.
For further possible reuses, you can refer to your Brill author/editor agreement or consent-to-publish form or consult our Policy on Self-Archiving.
When the intended re-use of your text does not comply with the terms listed above, permission from Brill is required and a fee may be charged. Please consult the general Permissions section in this case.
