Welcome to Brill's Literature and Cultural Studies Program

Brill’s Literature and Cultural Studies list has grown out to be a mature and blossoming program uniquely covering literatures from all over the world. It has a strong tradition in the comparative approach (in the series TSCL, FAVL, and CC), translation studies and world literature. The Journal of World Literature is the first journal in this rapidly developing field of research.

Brill’s commitment to interdisciplinary research is reflected in publications which link literary studies to the visual arts, ecocriticism, gender studies and the sciences. Brill is proud to offer various series on the newest research trends, such as Experimental Practices, which investigates the benefits of interaction between technoscience, literature, art and philosophy. Consciousness, Literature & the Arts which focuses on the emerging field of Consciousness Studies, whereas the relation between nature, the environment and culture are the subject of Nature, Culture & Literature and Studies in Environmental Humanities.

Besides the most current developments can we boost of an expertise in Avant-Garde, Modernism and modern literatures. These have been well-established in our series on French literature (FAUX, FPPH, CHIA), German literature, Hispanic literature, Slavic literature and English literatures, and typically for our program have branched out to cover worldwide modernisms. Behind the scenes, Brill has embarked on a unique journal mapping the global avant-gardes in the arts.
