Acknowledgements
This book grew out of three sessions on “Gardens and Academies in Early Modern Italy”, organised by Denis Ribouillault and Ginette Vagenheim at the Renaissance Society of America conference in 2021. The editor is very grateful to Ginette Vagenheim for her invaluable contribution to this conference and for her ongoing support of the publication project. Essays by Katrina Grant, Christiane Lauterbach, Laurent Paya and Denis Ribouillault have been added to the original contributions.
The editor received financial support from the research project “The Shared Languages of Art and Science in the Early Modern Period” (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grant, Canada), directed by Denis Ribouillault at Université de Montréal.
At Université de Montréal, Mariah O’Brien provided valuable help with editing papers and streamlining translation issues. Thanks are also due to Dr. Victoria Addona for her painstaking work in editing and proofreading the volume. Some Latin translations have been revised by Alin Mocanu, whom we would also like to thank.
Chapter 6 is a translation of a paper already published in French: Denis Ribouillault, “La fortune poétique du nymphée de la Villa Giulia”, in Jakob M. – Berchtold J. (eds.), Jardins en images. Stratégie de representation au fil des siècles (Geneva: 2020) 98–157. We are thankful to the editors for permission to publish it in English in this volume. This second revised and expanded edition of the text includes new and previously unpublished material.
