Abstract

This study analyses the relationship of some cardinals of the Colonna family to humanistic culture and investigates the hitherto unknown âpleasure groundsâ that these cardinals, as commendatory abbots, enjoyed at the Abbey of Subiaco between the 15th and 16th centuries. Here, surrounded by the writers of their entourage, who dedicated poetic and celebratory compositions to them, the Cardinals Colonna entertained themselves in joyful gatherings. The analysis of these poems and of old descriptions found among the archival documents, never before considered in the scholarly literature, has made it possible not only to understand the nature of these now vanished places and their uses, but also to rediscover some unknown representations of them in a cycle of frescoes that decorate the so-called âStudiolo di Marcantonio Colonnaâ in the Rocca Abbaziale (Abbey Fortress) of Subiaco.
