Hippocratesâ Aphorisms enjoyed great popularity in the ancient and medieval world and, according to Maimonides, it was Hippocratesâ most useful work as it contained aphorisms, which every physician should know by heart. They were translated into Hebrew several times, but it was Maimonidesâ Commentary on Hippocratesâ Aphorisms that made the work influential in Jewish circles. For the composition of his commentary, Maimonides consulted the Aphorisms through the commentary by Galen, translated by Ḥunayn ibn IsḥÄq. This edition of Maimonidesâ Arabic commentary and its Hebrew translations, the first with an English translation based on the Arabic text, is part of a project undertaken by Gerrit Bos to critically edit Maimonidesâ medical works.
Gerrit Bos (Ph.D. 1989) is Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at the University of Cologne, Germany. He has widely published in the fields of Jewish studies, Islamic studies, and medieval science and medicine in Arabic and Hebrew texts.
âThis particular volume, as well as the others in this project that I have had the pleasure of reading, is a meticulous work of painstaking scrutinizing of available manuscripts of Maimonidesâs work and their Hebrew translations. Each volume, and the one presented here is no exception, has an illuminating introduction that explains the steps taken to produce the edition, including addressing issues like the availability of manuscripts, problems related to them (faulty, abbreviated, and so on), and the steps taken to overcome or compensate for such lacks.â
