Teddi Dols and Mona Saif at Brill were a constant help in making sure that the articles were properly edited and prepared for publication. We also greatly appreciate Valerie Joy Turner’s careful and meticulous copyediting work that improved the book.
While preparing this volume, the editors were very saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Michael Burgoyne (1944–2021) who had wanted to contribute an essay on Mamlūk Jerusalem, but who, ultimately, was unable to do so due to health concerns. We offer our sincere condolences to his daughter Katherine Burgoyne in Toronto and the rest of his family.
The editors would also like to extend their gratitude to their families for their love and support during the course of this project.
