Notes on Transliteration and Style
In preparing this volume, Brill’s stylesheet and transliterations guidelines for the Islamic History and Civilization (IHC) series were followed.
Geographical place names are Anglicized; for example, Cairo, Baghdad, and Hijaz. Only those places that are small or largely unknown have been left with diacritics (for example, Āmid, Jazīrat Ibn ʿUmar). Dynastic names and the names of Arabic figures are transliterated; for example, Ayyūbids, Mamlūks, Nūr al-Dīn, Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn.
Dates are given in the form AH/CE unless otherwise indicated. Years appearing alone are typically common era dates, unless they are quoted from or refer directly to a primary source.
