Transliteration in this book seeks to stay as close as possible to modern Persian pronunciation, hence the use of âeâ rather than âiâ for kasreh and, thus, eżÄfeh, and not writing the silent vav, e.g. using taÊ¿ziyeh-khÄnÄ«, rather than taÊ¿ziyeh- khwÄnÄ«. The silent âheh â ending is written, e.g. nÄmeh. I give place names (that are still in use) in the standard English spelling. Words in common use in English such as âImamâ and âShiÊ¿iâ are not transliterated.
