Dairy milk yield recording is carried out in Spain since 1932. A lot of changes have occurred since then in this field, as well in dairy cattle, sheep and goat herds as in the milk yield recording organization and its regulation.

Nowadays, the base of the organization is the Milk Yield Recording Nucleus, that consists of at least five cattle, sheep or goat herds with a total amount of minimum 200, 800 and 1 200 dairy females respectively. Those are linked to breeders’ organizations and recorded data (milk yield, fat and protein) are submitted monthly to these organizations to include them in genetic evaluations. Data are also submitted to the regional and then to the national authorities (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) to establish the amount of the aids. Once the Ministry compiles the data, they are submitted to ICAR for publishing.

In 1998, some changes were proposed in the milk yield recording regulation within the National Commission of Milk Yield Recording, a state organization consisting of members of both national and regional authorities and representatives of breeders’ organizations related with milk production.

The reason of these changes was the power gained by the Milk Yield Recording Nucleus at the expense of breeders’ organizations, which resulted in a lack of communication and an increasing number of Nucleus. All these problems generated a slow-down in the flow of the submission of data.

Those changes involve a new concept in the organization, dismantling the old Milk Yield Recording Nucleus and creating a new organization: the “Regional Centre for Milk Yield Recording”. One centre in each one of the 17 regions. This new figure is considered in a draft of the new legal regulation on milk yield recording in Spain, which has been approved by most of the regional authorities. This will result in a better flow in the submission of data and thereby, better genetic evaluation of dairy cattle, sheep and goats. Moreover, the issued data have more accuracy and reliability thanks to the launching of a national database accessible via Internet.

With this new regulation, the possibility of introducing more traits (somatic cells, i.e.) is also open, as well as creating specific reference laboratories for sheep and goat milk.
