This volume thoroughly analyses the Neoplatonic sources and background of Gregory of Nyssa's eight Homilies on the Beatitudes according to the most preeminent themes: human virtue, knowledge of God and Self, negative theology, God's sublimity, á¼Ïάθεια and á½Î¼Î¿Î¹á½½ÏιÏ, the mutual relationship of the virtues, the Logos as physician, the essence of beauty, the contemplation of the universe, unification.

Salvatore Lilla, Dr.phil. (1958) in Classics, Università di Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore, D.Phil (1962) in Theology, Oxford University, was scriptor of the Vatican Library, and is Professor at the Patristic Institute Augustinianum, Rome. He has edited catalogues of Greek manuscripts in the Vatican Library and published extensively on Platonic philosophy and its influence on early Christian literature.

He has published several books and numerous articles, especially on Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine.
