Levitical Priesthood in the Aramaic Levi Document and Related Literature
Proceedings of the International Conference Held in Memory of Józef Tadeusz Milik, Organized by the Centre for the Study of Second Temple Judaism at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, 20â22 May 2024
The Aramaic Levi Document is a Jewish Aramaic work from the Hellenistic period, presenting Leviâs life as a pseudepigraphic autobiography. It depicts his elevation to an apocalyptic priesthood, his training in sacrificial rituals under Isaac, and his teachings on the future of the Levitical priesthood. This volume highlights the lasting significance of Józef T. Milikâs reconstruction of the text and its manuscripts. Contributions from nineteen scholars offer new insights into Levi as an ideal priest and teacher, while examining manuscript traditions, theology, and priestly authority. The collection advances the study of Second Temple Judaism and the development of priestly ideology.
Henryk Drawnel, SSD (2003), John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, is Professor of Ancient Judaism. He has published extensively on the Aramaic Levi Document and the Aramaic manuscripts of 1 Enoch, including The Aramaic Books of Enoch (Oxford, 2019).
