Paths to Liberation in Hindu Traditions

This volume presents new studies on the descriptions and discussions of the path to liberation in different Hindu traditions. The first part examines path-related contents in the works of three philosophers, namely the Vaiśeṣika Praśastapāda, the Śaiva Utpaladeva, and the Viśiṣṭādvaita Veṅkaṭanātha. The second part shows how path-oriented practices and theistic views are related with soteriological goals in the Pāśupata, Pañcarātra, and Purāṇic traditions. Overall, the essays illustrate the diversity and complexity of the discourse on the path to liberation, offering new insights into the religious and philosophical map of premodern South Asia.
Cristina Pecchia, Ph.D. (La Sapienza, Rome) is Lecturer at the University of Vienna and affiliated Researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She has published books and articles on Indian Buddhist epistemology, the history of Ayurveda, and the philological methods.
Marion Rastelli, Ph.D. (1998, University of Vienna), is Distinguished Researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She has published monographs and articles on the Pāñcarātra tradition and is co-editor of the Tāntrikābhidhānakośa, a dictionary of technical terms from Hindu Tantras.
Vincent Eltschinger is Professor for Indian Buddhism at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, PSL Research University, Paris. His numerous publications are dedicated mainly to the Buddhists’ polemics against Brahmanism from Aśvaghoṣa to late Buddhist epistemologists such as Śaṅkaranandana. Mention can be made of Penser l’autorité des Écritures (2007), Caste and Buddhist Philosophy (2012), Buddhist Epistemology as Apologetics (2014), Qu'est-ce que la philosophie indienne?> (2023, together with Isabelle Ratié).
