Dario Bullitta has undertaken a profound and detailed exploration of Samuel Meigerâs De Panurgia Lamiarum, the only treatise on demonological witchcraft to be penned in Middle Low German. Meiger navigates the turbulent waters of theological controversy, advocating for a balance between justice and mercy, while addressing the genuine societal fears surrounding witchcraft. His work is a crucial reflection of the ecclesiastical and political landscape of the Danish Crown under Frederick II, a period characterized by attempts to unify religious thought through cautious deliberation. This volume features the editio princeps of Meiger's text, providing access to an important source that has remained in obscurity. Bullitta's edition includes a thorough historical and theological analysis of the vernacular text and its sources, as well as comprehensive indexes that will assist readers in researching and fully engaging with its content, akin to the spirit of humanistic prints.
Dario Bullitta is an Associate Professor of Germanic Philology at the University of Turin.
