Between 1768 and 1772, the Roman restorer Bartolomeo Cavaceppi published his renowned Raccolta dâantiche statue, busti, bassirilievi ed altre sculture (A collection of ancient statues, busts, bas-reliefs, and other sculptures), the first treatise dedicated exclusively to this subject. Building on investigations into the broader art market in the Papal States, this volume contextualises the Raccola within the antiquities trade and the Roman publishing industry, and also examines it in relation to the restoration practices that developed in Rome in these years.
This provides the background to the first English translation of Cavaceppiâs treatise, making this crucial source on eighteenth-century restoration more widely available.
